Album Review: Torchia – Ending Beginning (2015)

Torchia ending beginnig

Thinking of great Death Metal acts around the world the most prominent country that comes to mind is Sweden. Well, with the likes of In Flames, Opeth, Bloodbath, Soilwork, etc.  its no  wonder too. After giving Finnish death metal act, Torchia, a listen on their newest demo EP ‘Ending Beginning‘ I am beginning to think they may give some of these acts a run for their money! It goes without saying that a lot of the aforementioned bands have been around for a LONG time, and while they are still very much active and important in the metal scene today, its safe to say there is a little wiggle room for some of these up and coming new acts to dominate the scene.

Ending Beginning, which is also the lead off track starts off with a bang. A solid mix of great riffs, double bass and monstrous vocals is always a great way to start an album. When you hear their sound for the first time, it almost feels like the beginning of an old school In Flames song with their own little twist. Loud pummeling drums, quick and dirty riffs really get the mood set for what is to come, then when the vocals kick in you get the feeling that these guys aren’t going anywhere, anytime fast. The whole album is over in a mere 15 minute, but god damn what a brutal, unrelenting 15 minutes it is. With a mixture of Thrash and Speed Metal, you can almost get a hint of Gremany’s Dew-Scented mixed with In Flames and Soilwork.

From start to finish, Ending Beginning shows the true talent of the band that is made up of guitarists Ville “Phinx” Riitamaa and Henri Heikkinen, bassist  Pirkka Birkstedt, drummer Joonas Juntunen, and vocalist Eetu Hentunen. If you are looking for a band that can fill the shoes of some of the hard hitters out there, these are the guys to check out. I have listened to this album over 20 times already and I just got it in the mail a couple days ago. It would have been more had I gotten to listen to it immediately (day jobs suck), but holy fuck if these guys aren’t going to be the next big act out of Finland, then we didn’t do something right. But, don’t just take our word for it, listen for yourselves! We follow these guys on their Soundcloud page and they have the whole thing up for streaming, so scroll to the bottom of the page and enjoy. . oh and don’t forget to BANG YOUR HEAD!!

  1. This is a really good sounding ep – thanks for reviewing it so I now I know another band to follow. If they can put out a full album this strong, that will definitely be worth the wait!
